Negative Aura: The Hall of Shame
Positive aura is aspirational; negative aura is autobiographical. Nobody reads "hit a silent PR" and feels seen, but every human alive has said "you too" to a waiter and then replayed it for a decade. This page ranks all 14 deductions from the aura points calculator, worst first, with commentary. As everywhere on this site, the numbers are invented jokes — precisely calibrated by the rigorous method of arguing about them until they felt right.
The full damage table
| # | The moment | Points | Commentary |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Got caught checking yourself out in a shop window | -1,200 | The double loss: you looked, and then you got caught assessing the look. No recovery move exists. |
| 2 | Pushed a pull door in front of a full waiting room | -1,030 | The sign was right there. The waiting room saw everything. The door will tell its friends. |
| 3 | Dramatically dropped the dumbbells — they were 5s | -1,000 | The clang promised 90 pounds. The plates said 5. The whole gym did the math instantly. |
| 4 | Replied-all to the entire company with "lol" | -950 | Two letters, four hundred recipients, one IT ticket titled "can this be unsent" (it cannot). |
| 5 | Told a joke, got silence, repeated it louder | -880 | The silence was the answer. Volume was not the missing variable. |
| 6 | Laughed at your own joke mid-sentence; nobody else did | -790 | You opened for yourself and the headliner also bombed. A one-person tragedy in two acts. |
| 7 | Tripped on flat ground, turned around to blame the floor | -740 | Checking the ground implies the ground did it. The ground has witnesses saying otherwise. |
| 8 | Fell off the treadmill and tried to play it as a dismount | -680 | Judges awarded no points for the dismount. The belt kept running, like your reputation, away. |
| 9 | Said "you too" when the waiter said "enjoy your meal" | -600 | The universal one. Everyone has done it; the deduction is for joining the club in public. |
| 10 | Called your boss or teacher "mom" | -520 | One syllable, instant regression to age seven, and the meeting still had 40 minutes left. |
| 11 | Delivered a passionate speech on mute in the video call | -450 | Your best points, delivered with full hand gestures, to an audience watching a silent film. |
| 12 | Waved back at someone waving at the person behind you | -420 | The wave was already committed mid-air. You had to finish it. They watched you finish it. |
| 13 | Said a big goodbye, then walked the same direction as them | -410 | The goodbye was excellent. The 400-meter silent walk together immediately after was not. |
| 14 | Filmed 14 takes of one bicep curl in the busy mirror spot | -330 | Fourteen takes means thirteen people waited. The final cut still did not make the feed. |
Why the losses are bigger than the wins
Our deepest single deduction (-1,200 for the shop-window incident) outweighs our biggest single gain (+1,000). That asymmetry is deliberate, because it matches how these moments actually feel: one public door-push emotionally cancels a month of quiet competence. The meme understands loss aversion better than most economics seminars, and our scoring honors that tradition. Note also that the cheapest deduction on the list, filming fourteen takes of one curl (-330), is fully premeditated — apparently the ledger extends a sliver of mercy toward confidence, however misplaced.
Worked example: one bad party
Consider a single evening. You get caught checking yourself out in the venue's window on arrival (-1,200). Mid-party you laugh at your own joke before the punchline and nobody joins (-790). You retell it louder (-880). Current total: -2,870 — Background Character, hanging on by 130 points. Then, on the way out, you call the host's mother "mom" (-520). Final score: -3,390, and the ladder demotes you to Certified NPC. Four moments was all it took. This is why the elders advise leaving parties early — which, notably, is worth +750 on the full points list.
Worked example: the theoretical worst day
For calibration, here is the floor of realistic human misfortune: the four deepest deductions on the entire list, collected in a single day. You get caught admiring yourself in a shop window (-1,200), push a pull door in front of a full waiting room (-1,030), dramatically drop dumbbells that turn out to be 5s (-1,000), and reply-all "lol" to the entire company (-950). Damage: -4,180 — tier Certified NPC.
Two things are worth noticing. First, even this catastrophe does not reach Aura Bankruptcy, which needs -6,000 or worse; you would have to add roughly two more top-tier disasters to bottom out. Second, a single ordinary good day of +1,500 or so does not undo it either. The ladder is intentionally slow to forgive in both directions, which is the closest thing this site has to a moral.
Calculate your own damage
We pre-checked the three most universal fumbles below — the pull door (-1,030), the "you too" (-600) and the phantom wave (-420) — for a starting balance of -2,050 (Background Character). Uncheck anything you have genuinely never done. We will believe you. The checkbox will believe you. Somewhere, a waiter knows the truth.
